A little bit of fluff

Fluff

Trilo, at the top of the stairs waiting to be given out to. Anyone would think I’m just a mean person at heart. It’s a traditional thing to take a photo of a pet, normally a cat immediately after the acquisition of a new bit of photography hardware. I didn’t have a cat handy, so I cornered the dog and took a couple. Fear not though, she did get a tasty doggy biscuit as reward.

I’ve been inspecting the results from the first wedding I shot with the 5D last weekend and I’m massively impressed. Took 840 and for the first time ever, I got over 50% keepers. Closer to 68% I’d say… So then I make a call to see how many photos I have to deliver, and that magic number turns out to be 60. D’oh. Time to do some editing…

Cannibal

Cannibal

Truly horrific! Pictured on Fountainstown beach, among the corpses of many other such cans that seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. One can only assume that they devoured each-other in a midnight orgy of cannibalism. Ok, I’ll get my coat…

Quiet Night In

Quiet Night In

It’s basic, it’s quick & dirty but I appreciate it. I came home from work tonight quite tired (I love unpaid overtime) and decided to do nothing but watch bad TV, drink the rest of the bottle of wine in the fridge and take the odd glance at the internet. Oh, and mess around with my newest baby, a 5D. Let’s just say I finally fully appreciate my cheapest lens, the 50mm f1.8 (or nifty fifty/plastic fantastic). I promised myself I’d buy one if nothing new was announced at PMA. Justified in that the amount of weddings I’ll be doing with it this year make it a worthwhile upgrade from the 20D. It’s not that I like spending money, I’ve just gotten used to it over the years…

Back at Gougane

Gougane Barra

Toward the end of yet another tour around West Cork, we ended up (in quite good time) back at Gougane Barra. I had the intention of trying to re-create a previous shot, albeit this time during the rapidly failing light. It was great to be down there again, all the better that there was nobody around. Allowed me to break out the tripod and take a few long exposure shots.

Later on this year, I intend on organising a meetup/photo-tour kind of event that’ll take in a few choice spots in West Cork. Keep watching this space for more details.

Overlap

Overlap

A board working it’s way loose on an old wooden fishing boat sitting on some very mushy seaweed in West Cork. Waiting to meet it’s maker? Either that or the future owner of the land it’s sitting on is in for a very large surprise.

Blog Awards Photoblog Long List

Oh dear, it would appear further inside information on the 2008 Irish Blog Awards long lists has leaked from Award HQ. The list is posted here, but for those of you that loathe following links, I’ll be good enough to swipe it and re-post it here.

That’s some list. I’m glad to see that alot of the people I previously tipped to be on the list are there and of course I’m relieved to see myself there; Although I’d be awestruck if I made it to the shortlist. Most of the list is populated by people I don’t even recognise so I suppose that makes me an old dog in the Irish photoblogging scene. I’d keep up with all the newbies but hey.. y’know what they say about not being able to teach old dogs…

Salt N’ Peppa

Salt N' Peppa

No, not a 1980′s hip hop group, this time it’s rather scary looking condiment holders. Here they are, posing for a little challenge on boards.ie. I could swear that sometimes when I open the cupboard, the white one is giving me the evil eye.

The great Canon sale of 2008

Time has come to shed some gear and re-invest. So, with that in mind..

Canon 20D for sale. Approx 15k actuations on the shutter. Has seen very little use since I bought a 30D. It’s essentially my backup camera. Also included is the kit lens (18-55mm EF-S), battery grip (complete with AA battery caddy (power the camera using 6 AA batteries instead of the BP-511 battery pack).

Everything that was in the box is included. Manuals, charger, cables (most of which are still in original plastic), software etc.. Also throwing in a couple of 1GB memory cards. Also, for whoever pays the asking price of €700, I’ll throw in a very little used 50mm f1.8 prime lens. Can’t say fairer than that…

Also for sale is my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX. Very sharp, fast and built like a tank. It’s got a small mark on the barrel, some of the coating was rubbed off but it in no way impacts on the performance of the lens. In fact you’d barely notice the mark unless you were looking for it.

Happy 2008 to all…

The start of another year is upon us (well, a few days ago) and as has become the norm nowadays, it’s nominatin’ time again. Damien (again working tirelessly) is already formulating a plan for the 2008 blog awards. As a change of pace this year, instead of nominating my now pseudo-photoblog, I urge you to instead take a few minutes to browse the list of massively award worthy folks below and give them your vote instead.

And an astounding photographer that deserves an award but would probably tell you to feck off if he was nominated for one…

That’s just a quick browse through my most visited links. There are too many new photobloggers around now to keep up with, so instead I’m being a bit backward, enjoying my little darkened cave and sticking with the ones I know. Either way, any of the above deserve your nomination.

Me, well I hope this year will be filled with more commercial work but hopefully will still leave me with enough time to get out and capture more landscapes than I’ve been able to in the last couple of months. 2008 is also going to be the year I finally develop a workflow and so end up spending a hell of a lot less time on the computer and more time filling the memory cards. Having said that, I’m sure I’ll still be saying the same once 2009 comes around. Anyway, have a good one!

Briefly in Kinsale

First of all, thanks to everyone that wished me a happy Christmas. Given how slack updates have been here over the past few months, I’ll take this opportunity to say “Happy New Year” in case I don’t come back until January. Now…

While poncing around Kinsale a few weeks back and, admittedly having picked up the camera (for fun) for the first time in many moons, I took a few minutes to stroll around the dock and see what I could see. Kinsale has always been a great spot for birds and I know some day I’m going to see someone down there with a 600mm lens sitting in a hide on the side of the pier. Lest I allow myself to get anymore distracted;

Heron-dous!

Work on the Camoflage

So, herons as usual. As with any birds that spend quite an amount of time in built up areas, this one allowed me to get quite close before eventually retreating to a boat further out in the bay. With my business in the gallery concluded, I took a drive out to nearby Garrettstown. This was during the so called ‘big storm’ that hit a few weeks back and threw waves of 30ft and over onto the west coast. I’d gotten reports of huge swells in Sligo, Galway and Kerry, so I figured it might be worth the 10 minute trip out to the beach to see if there was any risky surfing action afoot. No, just a couple of women chatting on the beach…

Meet at the beach

To have a wild guess on their conversation, I’d have to assume it went along the lines of “Jaays Bridie, will ya look at that quare fecker up there taking photos of us paddling” to which Bridie replied “Ah now Mary, I’ve been smoking pot all day, I can’t even see past me own toes”. Or maybe not.
