Back after I shot my first wedding, I got to thinking how if I was ever going to do this again, it’d be an advantage to have either a full frame camera or one that exhibits very low noise at high ISO. I also got to thinking how the 5D might be an ideal upgrade, first selling off my beloved 20D and buying the new body. Then I held the relatively new and generally unavailable 1D Mark3, purchased several weeks ago by a freakishly lucky, gadget loving friend. It’s a camera and a half; Maybe a camera and three quarters. It’s not full frame but it comes pretty close.

Advantages over the 5D may include 8fps extra, weather sealing, more focus points than you could shake a stick at, ISO6400, speed(?). Disadvantages? It’s not full frame, it’s about twice the price and there are reports (mostly from people seemingly obsessed with ranting) about focus problems. Oh and it doesn’t seem to be available in any great numbers yet. At least not the last time I checked.

As you’ve probably guessed by now, these photos were taken with a 5D and my splendid Sigma 150mm macro on Youghal beach in east Cork. Hopefully I should get to do the same with the 1D Mark3 at some stage and compare the two results. Maybe I’ll even be in a position to buy one of them once I sell my bike. Until then, I’ll do the lotto. Hardly any point now that the big jackpot has been won…
These and a few more are on flickr if you want a closer look.
Lovely photos - such sharpness!
Remember that even if you win a small amount on the lottery, say €2M, you could still buy a 1DM3, a few gorgeous lenses, a studio set and still have money left over for a holiday home or two and 10 years of Sleazyjet flights out to them. Heck, get yourself 3 1D bodies then you won’t have to worry about swapping lenses all the time.
Good luck!!
My desire for a 5d is becoming a bit of an obsession, I love the clarity of these shots Ryan, not a bit of noise. You’re making it worse!! Ahhhh!
Speaking as a freakishly lucky gadget loving person … I’d say get the the MkIII mate …
It is a bit of a beast though … I’ve noticed it does less for you than the 20D … I was out with some of the gang on Sunday on the train trip and noticed a lot of shots did not come out the way I wanted … so I suspect this was user error and you need to get used to using it at bit … at least that’s what I’m hoping !
Did you chat with Danny ?
If the two fo you are going to be in Valentia then I may need to bring the 20d … as no doubt the 1D will be taken away from me most of the time
… PS
Love the header photo! (And all the other photos of course!!)
It’s a great choice really. I’ve the 5D and it’s fantastic. My 5D has got drenched plenty of times, covered in all sorts of dirt, banged about a bit and no problems - it is fairly weather proof.
Faster fps would be nice, but since many of my shots are crumbly old buildings, it’s not such a big issue for me (I wouldn’t mind it for some of my bird shots, though)
If you could resist temptation for another few months, Canon will probably release a replacement for the 5D which will probably add a dust-remover and better high-ISO capability.
On the other hand, why wait?
