Never let it be said that I don’t take good advice when it’s portioned out to me. On that note I bring you the final filming at the Capitol Cinema.

But first, a little history lesson. This landmark cinema, located on the Grand Parade, has been open for almost 70 years and as Eoin English from the Irish Examiner writes;

Opened in 1947 as a one- screen cinema, the Capitol played a pivotal role in the life of Corkonians and hosted the first cinescope picture, The King of the Khyber Rifles, in 1954.

One of its biggest blockbusters, The Sound of Music starring Julie Andrews, ran for an incredible three months in 1967.

Hollywood stars like Maureen O’Hara were among the screen legends to visit the Capitol when it hosted the Cork Film Festival.

Lesson over, on with the photos. Murphy’s Law remaining intact, as soon as the Lord Mayor of Cork showed up, my camera locked up and only came back to the land of the living once I had time to shelter from the rain, strip it down and put it all back together. That, plus the unnaturally wet rain, was a balls.

I don’t know why I like this one, ‘cos technically speaking it’s crap!

So what does the future have in store for the Capitol?

The site will be demolished and converted into retail units and apartments.

Yeesh!

At least it’ll live forever on Flickr
