I’ve grown quite a liking for shooting surfing lately and found it irritating to be limited with a mediocre 300mm zoom lens. Nevertheless, I’ve made a go of it and last Sunday at Garretstown was no exception. The waves were amazing, as was the talent on the boards.. Err skill, I meant skill. That’s what I meant. Honest…

Yes, there was also a guy on a jetski there, who at times seemed to be a bit inquisitive as to why somone was perched on the rocks taking his picture. Hey, everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame!

Forgot to mention (but you probably assumed it alread), there are more of these on Flickr.

Nice waves, kinda feel like I should have been there instead of Inchydoney. Still got some nice waves there. That guy on the jetski was inquisitive becuase what he was doing is totally illegal!
Finally we’ve got photographic eveidence
Excellent shots too, really good. You should come to garrettstown more often :p
yeah I was trying to remember if the whole jetski thing is illegal.. he was getting some looks from the surfers when he was jumping the waves. I was convinced at one stage that he’d end up coming right down onto someones head.
I guess I should send the few pics of him onto the Gardai then
One of the lads has a 500mm lens on a Nikon D70 (effectively 750mm).
You’d need at least that really wouldn’t you? You still got some lovely shots with the 300.
I could be criticised for saying “the more the better”. I’d like a Canon 100-400L with a 2x teleconverter in my bag. But then again, I’m not made of money…
Are there disadvatages to those converters? I don’t know much about them. AFAIK the ones for the Fuji S5500 aren’t that good.
there are disadvantages.. afaik they cut the max aperature you can use and slow down the lens.
The last two shots are great, the jet-ski is terrific.
Your bird pic is like one already sent in to the TodayFM project..

Ryan, the heron photos are brilliant. Most heron photos look like its not really doing very much but waiting ages for its next meal. (Not unlike hanging around in a Little Chef).
